The easiest way to chill out is to grab your phone and scroll through Instagram, or watch something on your laptop \u2013 but these methods aren\u2019t necessarily beneficial to getting a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Can Childhood Bedtime Rituals Work For Adults?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Think back to when you were a child and preparing for bedtime. \u00a0What kinds of steps did you take to \u201cget ready\u201d for bed? I am assuming that you didn\u2019t just go straight to bed, turn off the lights, and fall asleep. \u00a0It is more likely that you had some sort of \u201cbedtime ritual.\u201d This ritual may have consisted of bathing, consuming a warm glass of milk, listening to a bedtime story read by an adult, and then slowly drifting off to sleep in a relaxed and comforted state. \u00a0We typically shed these bedtime rituals as we enter adolescence. As adults, we often forget to make time to prepare for bed. It\u2019s important, if not necessary, to have some sort of set behavior before going to sleep as an adult. For example, it\u2019s beneficial to disconnect from emails, social media and text messaging at least an hour before entering your bedroom. \u00a0It is also helpful to take a warm shower, have a cup of hot tea, and listen to an adult bedtime story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Adult Bedtime Stories And Why They Work<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Are you skeptical that adult bedtime stories won\u2019t actually help you sleep? \u00a0For many, childhood represents a carefree time without the stresses that come with being an adult. \u00a0It is possible that revisiting a similar bedtime ritual to the one you had during childhood may remind you of a simpler time, thus eliciting feelings of calm and relaxation. \u00a0According to Hope Bastine, a resident psychologist for sleep technology brand, Simba, \u201cSome of our earliest formed memories involve being cradled by a warm, comforting voice reading us a much-loved bedtime story,\u201d which meant that it was time to wind down, relax and fall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getthegloss.com\/article\/the-best-audiobooks-and-bedtime-stories-for-adults\">asleep<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Rather than just reading a boring book to help you fall asleep, adult bedtime stories are a newer concept where the story is actually being read <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> you while you listen. \u00a0Not only is the story meant to distract you, but it also relaxes you and prepares your body for rest. \u00a0Furthermore, \u201c[i]f you&#8217;re tired, relaxed, and ready for sleep you&#8217;re way more likely to fall asleep within a reasonable time each <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shape.com\/lifestyle\/mind-and-body\/adult-bedtime-story-sleep-tips-meditation\">night<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>How Do I Listen To An Adult Bedtime Story?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re ready to try your first bedtime story, the meditation app called Calm includes \u201csleep stories,\u201d which are bedtime stories designed for adults. \u00a0\u201cBefore bed, you select a 15- to 45-minute sleep story\u2014which could be about music, travel, or nature\u2014press play, set your device down, and close your eyes.
